Belief Statements

As a blacksmith would attempt to perform the delicate task of brain surgery, so we have attempted to make clear certain doctrines about various aspects of Christianity. This is in no way an exhaustive treatise on foundational beliefs of Christianity. It is simply our feeble attempt to lay a foundation, based on Scripture, which establishes the prerequisite for unity in belief and fellowship.

1. According to the Word of God, we believe the following to be essential for Salvation:

     a. faith in Christ-

John 3:16 – For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.

John 1:12 – But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name.

Eph. 2:8-9 – For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one should boast.

Acts 4:12 – And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men, by which we must be saved.

Acts 16:31 – And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you shall be saved, you and your household.”

     b. confession of Sin/Repentance-

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Luke 13:5 – I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.

Mt. 4:17 – From that time Jesus began to preach and say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

Acts 3:19 – Repent therefore and return, that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord.

c. public confession of Christ-

Luke 12:8-9 – And I say to you, everyone who confesses Me before men, the Son of Man shall confess him also before the angels of heaven, but he who denies Me before men shall be denied before the angels of God.

Romans 10:9-10 – If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved; for with the heart man believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.

     d. baptism – we believe baptism to be the completion of the salvation experience. It is this act of obedience that allows the new believer to publicly confess his/her desire to break with their past and begin a new life in Christ the King.

Acts 2:38 – And Peter said to them, “Repent, and let each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the Holy Spirit.”

Mark 16:16 – He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.

We do not believe that people are saved by their baptism experience. We don’t believe people are unsaved until they enter the water. What we believe is that the Biblical model is immediate baptism following a decision to repent.

Jesus commanded baptism – unwillingness to obey reflects an unrepentant heart.

2. We believe there is one God eternally existing in three persons; Father, Son, Holy Spirit – Eph. 4:4 – There is one body and one Spirit…

      a. Father – Gen 1:1 – In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

Mark 12:29 – Hear, O Israel; the Lord our God is one Lord.

      b. Son –  John 8:54 – Jesus answered: “If I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing; it is My Father who glorifies Me…”

John 10:30 – I and the Father are one.

Col. 1:15-19 – And He is the image of the invisible God, the first-born of all creation. So by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities – all things have been created by Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the first-born from the dead; so that He Himself might come to have first place in everything. For it was the Father’s good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him.

     c. Holy Spirit – 1 Cor. 2:4-5 – And my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God.

Zech. 4:6 – “Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,” says the Lord of hosts.

1 Cor. 2:10-16 – For to us God revealed them through the Spirit: for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man, which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God none knows except the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God that we might know the things freely given to us by God.

3. We believe in the deity of Jesus Christ

    a. His virgin birth – Luke 1:26-44

    b. His sinless life – Heb. 9:14 – How much more will the blood of Christ who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

    c. His death on the cross which paid for our sins – Heb 10:10 – By this will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

   d. His bodily resurrection – 1 Cor. 15:3-4 – For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.

   e. His personal return in victory for His church – Acts 1:11 – Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven.

4. We believe the Scriptures, both Old and New Testaments, to be the inspired Word of God, without error in the original writing; the complete revelation of His will for the salvation of men and the divine and final authority for Christian faith and life.

2 Tim. 3:16 – All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness.

Eph. 2:20 – having been built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the cornerstone.

2 Peter 3:15-16 – and regard the patience of our Lord to be salvation; just as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, wrote to you, as also in all his letters, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which the untaught and unstable distort, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction.

5. We believe that man was created in the image of God, but fell into sin and is, therefore lost, and only through the work of the Holy Spirit and the blood of Christ can man be placed in his right relationship to God.

    Genesis 1-3

Romans 3:23-24 – for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus.

6. We believe those individuals that have accepted Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, who love Him with all their heart, soul, mind and strength, and are aggressively striving to be like Jesus are members of Christ’s church family.

John 14:15 – If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.

John 10:27 – My sheep hear My voice and I know them, and they follow Me.
